In 2009 Precise Path received the “Innovation of the Year” award for its RG3 robotic greens mower from TechPoint’s MIRA Awards, the premier technology awards program in the state of Indiana.

The RG3 sells for $30,000 each, with most 18-hole golf courses buying or leasing two to five new units every three to five years. With labor productivity and efficiency gains, the RG3 pays for itself in as little as a year.

The RG3 is light-years ahead of residential-oriented robotic mowers on the market today, which travel in semi-random patterns, much like iRobot’s “Roomba” robotic vacuum cleaner, and can take hours to cut even a small plot of grass. In contrast, the RG3 travels in straight lines and with minimal overlap for fast and efficient mowing times and far superior aesthetic results, including the visible striping that is the hallmark of scrupulously manicured greens.

At the heart of the RG3 is Precise Path’s patent-pending mobile robotics technology, engineered specifically to overcome the challenges of navigating unstructured outdoor spaces. The technology trumps current GPS-enabled machinery by providing higher precision and greater reliability at a much lower cost. Precise Path Robotics is a spin-off of IndyRobotics, which was founded in 2004 to compete in the DARPA Grand Challenge -- a prize competition for driverless mobile vehicles sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the central research organization of the United States Department of Defense.

Under the guidance of IndyRobotics’ staff, over 100 volunteers created Indiana’s Robotic Vehicle (IRV) and the hardware and software to guide an autonomous vehicle through unstructured desert terrain. The team qualified for the finals and demonstrated its autonomous operation in the Mojave Desert in the fall of 2005.
